Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago
North Shore 1 Contract 10-047-3S
Project Overview
The Village’s of Winnetka, Kenilworth, Wilmette and Evanston local sewer system flows into a series of large diameter pipes owned and maintained by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD). These pipes, known as interceptor sewers, convey regional flows to an MWRD treatment plant. An inspection of the North Shore 1 intercepting sewer by the MWRD showed the presence of sewage solids deposits, root intrusions, infiltration, offset joints, broken connections, and concrete erosion. The sewer was constructed back in 1913 and has been in constant service since it went online. In order to restore the hydraulic and structural integrity of this aging sewer, it needs to be rehabilitated. In addition, physical inspections of the manholes revealed cracks and holes in the walls and bases of the manholes. As with the main sewer line, in order to restore the structural integrity of these structures, the manholes need to be rehabilitated as well. The overall project will consist of multiple phases, with a total project duration of up to 3 years to complete the work in all communities.

Future Improvements
The rehabilitation of 14,400+ linear feet of sewer lines and Manholes from Winnetka to Wilmette Illinois. Plus additional New Manholes to be installed in Evanston Illinois.
Project Work Overview
Sewer Relining and Manhole Rehabilitation on Sheridan Rd. from Cherry Rd. Winnetka, IL to Sheridan Rd. Bridge or approximately 613 Sheridan Rd., Wilmette, IL. (Roughly 2.5 miles.)
Three individual manhole locations for new manholes to be installed at:
703 Sheridan Rd., Evanston, IL | 525 Sheridan Square., Evanston, IL | 7799 N. Sheridan Rd. Evanston, IL
Type of Work Performed
Sewer manhole inspections by man entry, sewer televising and maintenance repairs. 23 total manhole locations need to be accessed. Installation/Excavation of 7 Shaft locations for installing new sewer pipe for rehabilitation via Slip lining Method which is a trenchless technology.
Duration
This is a 1,000 Calendar Day project, approximately 3 years.
Schedule/Phasing
The work will be performed in phases starting from the North and working South. To install the sewer pipe via slip lining, we need an insertion shaft and a receiving shaft. We will not be opening more than 2 shafts for extended periods of time. Typically, two shafts will be open for 3-4 months as we install the new sewer pipe in between the two shafts. There may be a short time when there is a third shaft open when we plan to move between work areas.
Work Time
7AM to 5PM daily work duration with option to work Saturdays if possible.
The actual work will be only accessing one manhole at a time for 1-2 hours for an initial inspection of approximately 23 manholes. Following the inspection, we will return to approximately 8 of the manholes for televising via robotic and man entry. The televising will be 3-4 hours. If the weather allows, we could realistically complete all the maintenance work in 1 week, but it could take up to 1 month.
Phasing & Traffic Control Overview
The MWRD has provided an extensive traffic control plan for the entirety of the project.
Phase I Cleaning/Televising: We will set up daily temporary lane closure for intermittent operations. Most of the inspection locations we will only need to close the lane during work hours.
*What to Expect – Traffic Delays with lane re-direction on Northbound Sheridan Rd. during the hours of 7AM to 5PM Monday thru Friday, (Saturday work determined by necessity) duration is anticipated to take 2-3 months for Cleaning and 30 days for Televising.
Phase II Access Pit/Shaft Installations: Access Pit/Shaft will be open for 3-4 months, with permanent lane closures in place as the work is performed daily within these shafts. Which will typically be only two shafts at a time.
